My husband’s heritage is Polish and Ukranian so we celebrate Valeja every Christmas Eve together with extended family. The meal begins with a small plate drizzled with honey and about 10 cloves of garlic. It is passed around the table with a another small plate of cubed sweet bread to dip in the honey. The other dishes in the meal are fried fish, babalkes (bread balls) in sauerkraut, pierogies, and sour mushroom soup. My husband’s parents passed away two years ago, but we continue the tradition. We really miss them!

Ever since I can remember we have had a Jerusalem Super. We eat dinner by candlelight on Christmas Eve, and we eat only foods that Mary and Joseph might have eaten; fish, figs, dates, grapes, cheese and crackers, pistachios… then we gather in the living room and read the Christmas Story from Luke 2. I love it so much, that although I am now married, I still make sure that we can make it to my parent’s house for the favorite Jerusalem Super. I even did it with my roommates when I was away at college!
I love seeing my daughter discover all of the old Christmas shows that I watched when I was a kid.
My favourite holiday tradition is getting together with my whole family at Christmas and enjoying the warmth of togetherness, good food, faith, and fun. I love creating new memories!
My favorite holiday traditon is letting the kids open one gift on Christmas Eve day- a teaser, because it’s always Christmas themed pj’s. My mom did it every year for my sister and I- right up through adulthood, until we moved out, and now I do it with my girls. Every year the girls are so excited to get to open one gift early, even though they KNOW it’s jammies.
