list of chores for a toddler

Although a 20-month-old is only learning how to be self-sufficient, he or she will welcome the chance to follow mom around with a dusting cloth or use a little handbroom to help sweep the floor. Young children consider chores to be a form of play. Who are we to take away a child’s fun, right?! Here are some chores that a toddler can do with some supervision.

toddler chores

  1. Help make her bed
  2. Help feed pets
  3. Dust low furniture
  4. Pick up toys and books
  5. Help wipe up messes
  6. Put dirty clothes in hamper
  7. Sweep sidewalk
  8. Help mom wash dishes in the sink (using a step stool and lots of sudsy water)
  9. Unload dishes (preferably the non-breakable ones) and hand to mom to dry and put away
  10. Help sort laundry into whites and colors

My toddler is always pestering me to help, this list is a great way to help me decide what he can and cannot help out with.

My 4-year-old LOVES doing the dishes. She actually does a pretty good job, only a little mopping of water needs to be done!

    11. Help wash pets.

Our two-year-old loves to get into the bath tub with our little Yorkshire Terrier “Dixie” and give her a bath. It’s probably best that this be a swimming suit occasion though.

Of course afterward is there is brushing and drying of the animal as well.

Great list! I learned quickly that making my 2YO wipe up something he spilled (or when he spit–yuck!) wasn’t punishment at all. He started spilling things so he could get a wet wipe and clean it up! :-)

I think I may try him on helping me to unload the dishwasher now.

great list! I’m starting already with my 16mo. I ask her to help me pick up her toys and put them in the toy box. She does help but 9 times out of 10 she immediately dumps them out. I’ll keep your list in mind when she’s a bit older :)
