Read Across America Day is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for everyone to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author, Dr. Seuss. Here is a list of activities to bring reading excitement to children of all ages.
- Read a favorite Dr. Suess book with your family.

• The Cat in the Hat and Other Dr. Seuss Favorites - Have a Reading Camp-Out.
• Have each member of your family grab a pillow and book (or stack of picture books). Pick a cozy spot like the family room floor, set the timer for 30 minutes or less (depending on the age of your readers) and have everyone read, read, read quietly to themselves. Make sure that you are participating as well. Modeling reading is an amazing gift you can give to your children! - Play Book Charades.
• Write down some of your family’s favorite book title on slips of papers. Have people act out the book without words or sounds and see who can guess them. - Have a book-inspired dinner. Don’t forget to read the accompanying book.
• Green eggs and ham (a little green food coloring goes a long way)
• Pizza (from The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza))
• Pears, plums, cherry pie, etc (from The Very Hungry Caterpillar)
• Pasta (from Strega Nona)
- Dress as your favorite book character.
- Make a thank you card for your local librarian and/or reading teacher.
- Watch a movie based on your family’s favorite book.
