list of eco-friendly products for your laundry

Welcome to the first in a series of posts to inspire you to get organized this spring! I don’t usually discuss products here because everyone is different and everyone has a different style. Plus, I understand from my own experience and belief in budgeting, that budgets don’t often allow for us to run out and buy the coolest and latest gadgets or products. However, I’ve come across some pretty amazing things over the past few years that would make great assets to anyone’s home and provide solutions to common household organizing problems.

The laundry room is a room that doesn’t require a lot of fluff.  It is a hard-working room that fulfills a very necessary role in our homes.  However, it is a place where much can be done to both save on utility costs and be sensitive to the earth.  It is a good place to start.  Here are some items that I would highly recommend for your own laundry room.  The Amazon Associate link shows you an example, gives you a visual, and explains the value of the product in more detail.

  • Front-Loading Washing Machine – A front-loading washer requires less water, holds larger loads and saves energy in reduced water heating. It also saves you time with fewer loads to wash, and keeps your clothes looking better longer.
  • Nellie’s Dryer Balls – Nellie’s Dryer Balls are a safe, toxic free and environmentally friendly way to soften your laundry. Nellie’s Dryer Balls are designed to reduce drying time and soften fabrics naturally without the use of chemical fabric softeners.
  • Indoor Folding Drying Rack – Take advantage of a compact drying rack to hang clothes on when the weather doesn’t allow you to hang clothes outdoors.
  • Maggie’s Soap Nuts. (200-400+ Loads) – 100% Natural Laundry Soap. Grows on Trees. Wild Harvested! Processed with NO Chemicals or Preservatives.
  • Oxo Brite – When my children were small, I discovered that bleach made stained clothing white again. However, I have not used chlorine bleach now for over a year. Instead I use an earth-friendly alternative that uses the power of oxygen.
  • Indoor/Outdoor Retractable Clothesline – Don’t let association rules stop you from receiving the benefits of line-drying your clothing in the warm sun. A dryer can be one of the biggest energy users in your home.

What do you do to make your laundry process more eco-friendly?

  • I love Nellie's too! I shared the idea of using a cloths line with a client a few days ago and it's amazing how easy it really is and what a big impact it can really have. This is a great list, thanks for sharing!

  • Jenny's Simply Clean laundry detergent. Developed by a mom whose son was suffering from eczema, it is green, gentle, and smells great. I'm a big fan. And I love supporting a WAHM, too!

  • My husband really discovered the Method laundry detergent. It is all natural and phosphate free and I have to tell you works much better than those "well known" brands! I love Mrs. Meyer's cleaning products. They combine aromatherapy with cleansing. My house smells lovely when I use them. I just discovered the laundry detergent in a calming lavender scent and will be using this as soon as the Method one is gone. Both have super-concentrated liquid so the smaller bottles take up a lot less room on your shelf and wash as much, if not more!
