Halloween will be here before we know it. Planning a child’s costume (or your own) can be an exercise in creativity and thriftiness. You probably have all types of materials lying around your house that would contribute to a terrific DIY costume this Halloween. All it takes is some time and a little ingenuity. It makes a terrific family project for the weekends. Members to ListPlanIt.com, be sure to check out Costume Planner in Holidays & Occasions to make planning your costume(s) easy.
Here are some ideas for putting together a costume for your little trick-or-treater.
- Commit to a costume. Whether for yourself or your kids, take some time to look around the web for some costume inspiration. Check out ListPlanIt‘s Halloween Costume board on Pinterest. Make a definite decision before you move on to the next step.
- Make a list of supplies/accessories. While store bought costumes can be an easy solution, they are often expensive and made from thin materials. Many parts of the country are not warm come October 31st. Consider ways to keep warm such as sweat pants, stretch pants, tights, long sleeve shirts or sweatshirts. A bottle of spray hair color can save 50-75% over a wig. Remember to add reflective tape or glow sticks to your Halloween shopping list to keep children visible to vehicles. Find your trick-or-treat bags or buckets and make sure they are ready to go.
- Consider going “Frankenstein”. Build something unique from spare parts. There are loads of costumes that can be made (with or without sewing) from materials found around the house:
• cardboard boxes
• duct tape
• spray paint
• yarn
• balloons
• hooded sweatshirts
• safety pins
• fabric glue or hot glue
• felt
Have you or your child committed to a Halloween costume yet for this year? Will you be making your costume or buying it?
