If you or someone you know is a mother, then you can thank Sonora Smart Dodd for envisioning a day when all mothers can be honored for the contribution they make to so many people. Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate not only you as a mother (if you happen to be a mother), but all of the women in your life who have raised you, nurtured you, educated you, and loved you.
- Mom – Nothing says true comfort more than Mom. This is the person who provided for your most basic needs, doctored your scraped knees, chased away the nightmares, believed in you when you didn’t know if you could believe in yourself. No mother is ever perfect, but most mothers would jump in front of a bus to protect their child(ren).
- Grandma- If you are lucky enough to have your grandmother in health, then be sure that you make every effort this Mother’s Day to thank her for your existence and her support.
- mom friends – You know what it is like to be a mother: an often selfless job, with little acknowledgment of the myriad of things that you do for your family, and the pay stinks (unless you count payment in hugs and kisses – that’s pretty great). Let your fellow mom-friends know that you think they are terrific moms. Show them your support.
- mom-figures – Whether it is a stepmom, a mother-in-law, an aunt, a family friend, a spiritual leader’s wife, or any other woman who showed you consistent love and support, as a mother might, be sure to let them know how much that has meant to you. They weren’t asking for anything in return. Just a stake in helping to make you a great woman.
What plans to celebrate the mothers in your life are you making for Mother’s Day? What are your favorite ways to show you mom how much she means to you?
