Whether you are the type to make a costume from scratch every year, the type to use what you have around your house or what you can find in second hand stores, or the type to purchase a ready-made costume in the store, you have quite a few options. Gathering the materials and accessories together to make the perfect costume for yourself and your family takes time but can be loads of fun for everyone. Here are some places you can find what you need.
- Fabric store for patterns, materials, and odds and ends
- Local discount stores have quite a selection of complete costumes and accessories.
- Local party stores also have a large array of costumes and supplies.
- Online costume suppliers such as Lillian Vernon and Oriental Trading
- Local costume rental shop
- Local consignment/resale shop
- Ebay has so many costumes that start at a low bid, but be sure to watch the charge for shipping.
- Craigslist/Freecycle.org are great places to find people willing to just give away their costumes.
- Goodwill has a large variety of used costumes and you would be supporting a useful organization.
- Swap with a friend. Send out an email to friends asking to get together with used costumes and trade with each other.

I have to admit, I was cruising along dropping entrecards, came to your blog and thought “uh-huh, more pay per post…”
I expected a list of link ads.
I was so wrong!
Thank you for a great resource. I’m putting the link to the free October calendar page on Grandmother Wren tomorrow –
I’m going to add a link to your list too, just to get October off to a thrifty start!
Thanks again

I was just in WalMart today. They have a pretty good selection. Much easier on the pocket book too, compared to the big party store we shall not name. :)
I like to check on Freecycle and raid our own costume box. It’s free and green!
Jennifer, have you checked out Zwaggle.com for costumes? They’ve just added a Halloween category so that parents (like me) who don’t want to spend cash on a costume can use points to get a gently used one from some other parent. It’s free, it’s green, and it’s fun, just like Halloween should be.
