Times have changed since my grandmothers were keeping house for their young families. Though I have given birth and own a home, that is where many of our similarities end. Here are just a few things my grandmothers did that I (almost) never do:
- Ironed clothes and sheets
- Cooked hot breakfasts and lunches
- Regularly cleaned windows, walls, and ceilings
- Washed all dishes by hand
- Hung wet clothes on a line every time: either outside or in basement
- Sewed clothing
- Allowed hubby to relax in front of the TV when he gets home from work
- Sent (young) kids outside all day without any supervision
- Kept house neat as a pin
- Dressed for dinner and for leaving the house, often in a dress

Wow, then I am probably living in my grandmother's time, LOL! But then I live in Europe ~grin~.
I iron lots of our clothing and mangle all our sheets (not that I love to do it, but has to be done).
I hang our clothes out outside every day (sometimes twice) unless it is raining and then I hang them on dryer racks inside the house.
I cook every single day from scratch, sometimes twice. I bake everything and make all the snacks for my family.
I sew clothes and diapers as much as I can find the time. I always change my clothes (skirts or dresses, don't wear pants) whenever I go outside or when guests come.
I let hubby relax in front of TV, but usually after the children are in bed =). We do have 6 children, BTW.
I guess that's why I am so busy and can't find time to do much more than taking care of my home and family, LOL.
It' interesting to see how many of you are not doing these things anymore though
My grandmother rode on horse and buggy when she was a kid :)
I could add like 20 things to that. Grow a vegetable garden. Can the food. Drink lots and lots of beers.
How did they have time for all of that?!
Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm glad you enjoyed New Orleans when you were here!
Ugh- windows, walls, and ceilings, and of course the baseboards I never get around to cleaning.
This is such a great list. I wish I had enough time to keep the house immaculate since I think (and my fiance will vouch for it) I am borderline OCD about cleaning. And I don't think I would mind wearing dresses all the time as long as I could keep a few pairs of jeans for those days I just feel like pooh.
And all without anti-depressants!
Come on, next thing she is going to tell you is that she had to walk two miles to school in the snow, uphill, without shoes... ;) I LOVE this post! Hmmmm... I smell a blog post for my own! (I will be sure to credit you)
I bet your grandmother never served pb&j or canned soup and tried to pass that off as a nice home made dinner either!
IRON SHEETS? Huh?
I love this list!
Great list! My kids think an iron is something daddy uses every now and then. I call that progress!
