Like I said, times have certainly changed since my grandmothers raised a family. While they stayed very busy cooking and cleaning, parents today are busy in a different kind of way. Electronics have brought many conveniences to modern families, shifting mom’s time from cooking (microwave) and cleaning (dishwasher, washing machine) to other types of family and household matters. Here are some things that I do that my grandmothers never did:
- Keep track of the family’s finances
- Drive my kids to soccer practice one day and girl scouts the next
- Browse the internet for the best deals on scooters for the kids
- Run an online business that includes an email newsletter, frequent blog posts, and a lot of writing/typing
- Fly cross-country for a vacation
- Jump on the trampoline with my kids
- Teach the kids to ride their bikes (that was Grandpa’s job)
- Playdates with moms to discuss sippy cups and pacifiers and bedtime routines
- Cosign the loans for our house and cars
- Drive to Target just to get out of the house (and come out with $50 of stuff I hadn’t intended to buy)

#10 says it all. When my first was born, we went to target all the time and I even had a printout of what was clearanced on each day of the week.
I agree though, there’s so much that we do that our foremothers didn’t.
I think we’re pretty lucky to be moms in today’s world.
It would be cool to see a list from your grandmother of the things that were on her To Do list that aren’t on yours, too!
I have to admit that I think your list is a lot more appealing! Especially the drive to Target!
